In just a few short months, Las Vegas welcomes The Planet 13 Superstore. Located off the Strip, less than a 10 minute walk from the Wynn Hotel, the store will be visible from approximately 65,000 hotel rooms as well as Interstate 15. Focused on creating a unique, upscale entertaining experience, Planet 13 will be a must see for both tourists and locals.
Phase one of the new complex which opens to the public on November 1st is 40,000 square feet and will play host to 16,500 square feet of retail space and 45 registers. When visiting, patrons will not only be able to shop the retail cannabis store, but also enjoy a variety of entertainment and special effects including:
LED Interactive Lotus Flowers:
As guests approach The Planet 13 Superstore complex they are greeted by 13, 15-foot-tall LED lotus flowers on the roof of the building. Made of acrylic leaves and metal stems, the lotus flowers are controllable by visitors, making them interactive pieces of art.
Outdoor Water Feature:
Planet 13’s sophisticated outdoor water feature acts as a glowing beacon on the exterior of the building. Vibrant LED lights with fog create a glowing effect which can be seen from a distance and this feature will have moving water, steam, and lights that replicate flames.
Interactive Laser Graffiti:
Outside the facility, visitors will experience interactive laser graffiti where they can leave their mark with unique writings and drawings. This interactive laser feature simulates actual spray paint allowing the paint to run on the walls when the button is held for a long period of time. This is the first permanent installation of this technology in the world.
LED Interactive Floor:
The sensory-activated floor leads patrons directly to the store lobby while experiencing an interactive show along the way.
Aerial Orb Show
While moving inside the main portion of the complex, guests are met with a glowing aerial orb show high above the dispensary floor. Six giant orbs will fly into the room, and they’ll perform with the beat of the music every 10 minutes. Then, they’ll fly back and recharge for the next show. This show is operated through advanced GPS technologies.
These are just some of the amazing facets of The Planet 13 Superstore experience. The launch of Phase 2 in the future will bring a coffee shop and both cannabis and non-cannabis retailers. Yearning to learn more about the work being done by Planet 13, we recently had the opportunity to sit down with their CEO, Bob Groesbeck.
VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Please give us a little background on Planet 13 Holdings, Inc., for those that may not be familiar with your company?
BOB GROESBECK: Over the past few years, we have been operating an award-winning dispensary co-located by both Medizin and Planet 13. We have expanded our cultivation and production, and now we have our own branded product which is Medizin. We have vape cartridges, flower, concentrates, and a few different edible varieties. Our company has garnered several top 3 international finishes for its strains over the last few years at the IC Mag 420 Cup.
VCM: So, let’s talk about Planet 13 being referred to as the “Largest Cannabis Entertainment Complex in the World.” What can you tell us about this superstore?
BG: With our concept being the first of its kind in the world, we plan to transform the retail cannabis space. Within our first phase, we have spent over a million dollars on special effects, with a huge interactive LED floor, outdoor water feature, aerial orb show, 3D projection visual experience, laser graffiti walls and electric interactive lotus flowers on the roof. Marijuana tourism will never be the same. While experiencing a sensory overload of special effects, guests can still count on the same level of service provided by our knowledgeable staff and wide variety of quality cannabis products. Planet 13 will deliver on the full Vegas treatment with all the glitz and glam tourists have come to expect.
VCM: What kind of visitors do you think this entertainment complex will attract?
BG: Planet 13’s new interactive entertainment experience has been designed to appeal to both cannabis aficionados and the general public.
VCM: You talked about the Medizin-branded product line. What will happen to the Medizin brand?
BG: Our Medizin-branded line will continue to be the cornerstone of our products in our locations. Locals have continued to associate Medizin synonymously with exceptional quality, and we want to make sure we continue to expand on that. Currently we offer flower, concentrates, vape cartridges and a variety of edibles.
Medizin’s recently launched vapes have been one of our most successful product launches yet. Our state-of-the-art production process, utilizing THC distillate and cannabis derived terpenes, coupled with premium hardware, is simply unmatched. This technology consistently delivers an unparalleled vaping experience.
VCM: What is your most popular strain?
BG: This one’s easy. Consistently asked for by name, Chloe is a powerful and mysterious sativa dominant strain created by our VP of Operations, Chris Wren. This strain won 1st place at the International Cannagraphic Magazine Cup in 2015 and has since gone on to maintain a strong local following and praise for its unique effects. Even though this strain leans 60/40 sativa-dominant, it possesses potency and physical sedation that can lull the most experienced person to sleep with continued consumption. Chloe is also a welcomed companion for patients seeking relief from a wide variety of ailments, including loss of appetite and chronic pain.
VCM: Are you noticing any trends in product sales?
BG: The trend is definitely any grab and go items. More than ever, we see our customers looking for convenience in a few different varieties. Vapes, pre-rolled joints and beverages are especially popular for the tourists visiting from out of town but classic flower still holds the crown as most popular.
VCM: Currently, your store experiences, on average, around 750 customers per day. What kind of traffic do you expect for the superstore location?
BG: At the superstore location, we conservatively expect over 2000 customers per day.
VCM: Do you feel Las Vegas is already becoming a tourist destination for cannabis?
BG: I do, but I expect Planet 13 to raise the bar. I am confident we will attract a fair share of the over 55 million annual visitors to Las Vegas.
VCM: What are your future plans for Phase 2 and beyond?
BG: We have been approached by several groups and are exploring different concepts as we speak, but the vision continues to remains the same. Planet 13 will continue to diversify its attractions by adding retail spaces and further concepts within our total 112,800 square feet.
VCM: What does this superstore mean for locals? Will this generate any new opportunities and jobs in Las Vegas?
BG: Planet 13 anticipates hiring an additional 100 employees to assist us in operating our superstore and entertainment complex. We will be looking for a variety of budtenders, inventory specialists, receptionists, and more.
VCM: How does Planet 13 impact the industry locally and nationally?
BG: We strive to be the leader in changing the negative stereotypes around cannabis and cannabis culture by providing an upscale, classy and entertaining experience at our store(s). It is also important to us that we continue to proactively bring awareness to the legalization of cannabis in the Nevada market for tourism and much-needed tax revenue for our local communities.
VCM: With lounges being heavily discussed in Nevada, how would that affect Planet 13?
BG: This will largely be determined by the state rules and regulations. Should we be granted the opportunity to have a lounge, we fully expect to participate.
